Sequoia Couples Retreat | San Juan Islands, Washington

This intimate kayak retreat is designed for adventurous couples at all life stages looking to unplug, rejuvenate and reconnect to your partner, self, and the natural environment. Over the course of three days, we will sea kayak between a chain of beautiful islands, lead you through the Gottman Seven Principles (7P) Program, and provide time to rest and relax with your partner.

You will return home feeling inspired, refreshed, and more deeply connected as a couple, with concrete skills and a life-changing, memorable experience to keep your relationship strong and satisfying for years to come.

The Gottman Seven Principles Program…

is based on the Gottman’s New York Times Bestseller, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, and will equip you with research-based relationship skills to strengthen your friendship, intimacy and ability to manage conflict as a couple. Relationship expert and wilderness guide Blair Hensen will lead this immersive retreat, and will provide you with ample time to have private conversations with your partner to facilitate meaningful and lasting change. No self disclosure is required. The retreat also includes a pre and post online group session with Blair.

Cost Of The Retreat

The cost of this incredible couples adventure is $4,950. One registration per couple includes the all-inclusive experience, minus travel to/ from Anacortes Ferry Terminal. Inquire about scholarships, and military discounts.

Meet Your Facilitator

Blair Anne HensenMS, LCPC, NCC, is a licensed clinical professional counselor in Montana and credentialed as a National Board of Certified Counselors. She specializes in relationships working with clients to reduce reactivity, build inner awareness of thoughts and emotions, and deepen connection. In addition to counseling, Blair is a writer, speaker, and wilderness guide. Her writing has appeared in Ski MagazineMountain Outlaw, and Backcountry Magazine. She is a trained Gottman 7 Principles Leader and facilitates prevention programs for couples, families, and groups in a variety of settings to support growth in relationships, mental health, and decision making. She is also the owner and founder of Open Routes, and is so excited to work with Sequoia Immersions to lead this transformative couples enrichment adventure.

We are partnering with wilderness guides from Breakwater Expeditions for this retreat. The staff at Breakwater have decades of experience leading backcountry wilderness expeditions, and have guided sea kayak trips in the San Juan Islands for over ten years. We have worked with them for over seven years, and are thrilled to collaborate with them again to provide you this transformative experience.


Retreat Itinerary

Day 1

  • Meet at the ferry in Anacortes, WA (early afternoon — exact time TBD based on ferry schedule)

  • Take ferry to Lopez Island

  • Shuttle to campground

  • The evening will be spent with introductions, setting up camp, preparing our gear to launch kayaks Saturday morning, dinner, & the first couples session

Day 2

  • Couples morning session & breakfast

  • Launch kayaks from Lopez island

  • Lunch on Blind Island

  • Paddle to Jones Island & set up camp

  • The rest of the day will be spent with couples sessions, dinner, & down time to relax & explore the island

Day 3

  • Couples morning session & breakfast

  • Launch kayaks from Jones island

  • Paddle to Turn Island & set up camp

  • The rest of the day will be spent with couples sessions, dinner, & down time to relax & explore the island

Day 4

  • Couples morning session & breakfast

  • Launch kayaks from Jones island

  • Paddle to Lopez Island

  • Final wrap-up session

  • Ferry back to Anacortes & return home (early afternoon — exact time TBD based on ferry schedule)
